I've got a Canon mini DV camera and after 18 months (8 months out of warranty) it developed "Black Screen" - turn it on and nothing. £450.00 for 18 months. I thought bollocks I'm not having this. I phoned the shop and they said there's nowt they can do, get in touch with Canon. I googled the fault and found a forum with hundreds of others experiencing the same thing.
